Mykonos to Siros

A day-trip to Syros is a taste of elegant history in the Greek islands. The capital of Ermoupoli is considered one of the most picturesque island towns in the country thanks to its marble streets, fine neoclassical architecture and classic design. Ermoupoli’s Municipal Palace and Miaouli Square were both designed by the famous European architect Ernst Ziller. Nearby, the grand Apollo Theater was modeled after the La Scala in Italy. Many visitors time their holidays for one of the many international music festivals that are hosted at the theatre including the well-regarded Festival of the Aegean. The island also has historic roots in traditional rembetiko music.
The hilltop northern area of Ermoupoli called Ano Syros offers panoramic views of the island, the port and views of the sea and surrounding islands. Syros also has a unique religious history for Greece since it shares both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox roots. Its landscape is dotted with both types of churches. Finally, Syros is known for its excellent restaurants ranging from home cooked Greek food to the fine Mediterranean cuisine.
